Fricki'n Fan

Fricki'n Fan

There is little that is more annoying than a flickering moving light caused by a loose fan, add the noise to that and you've got a deal breaker.

Interrupting Human Says What?

Interrupting Human Says What?

In retail I've really run into some social conundrums. Like this one.

A little Too Waspy

A little Too Waspy

I'm really not sure how her being a school teacher somehow gave her the power to sense if there was a wasp in my car, but I digress.

Waking Up Aspie

Waking Up Aspie

Change itself is hard for an Aspie. But I have had such life altering things happen to me that sometimes when I would wake up I have to convince myself that those things really happened.

Ok?...

Ok?...

I will never understand what seem people will allow to happen, and forgive.

Take That...Kid...

Take That...Kid...

Unfortunately a true story. I was in a new school for a week. I was already being bullied by the students. So I doodled on my notes in class. Enough so that the teachers of my classes took it upon themselves to "teach me a lesson." They put me in a room and mocked my artwork. They threw away my art supplies, and they told me I would never do anything with it.

My brother's friend bought a "camera' from a bum and it turned out to be fake. I saw the same exact camera at a pawnshop an hilarity issued.

This is how I met my fiance. Love at first...unwilling venture from the house.

Stick To The Plan

Stick To The Plan

The best laid plans. I used to sit in my car before I went inside a place and plan out my conversations with the people inside. I didn't want to get caught off guard, but most of the time I was.

Couldn't Be Me

Couldn't Be Me

When telling someone who knows about a situation somewhat about how the situation has affected me, they somehow feel the need to distance themselves from the situation. It's as if they feel like I blame them personally.

The Cycle

The Cycle

It's really hard to break this cycle. You either feel bad, and people are mad at you for it, or you act confident, and people attack you for it.

Aspie Scapegoat?

Aspie Scapegoat?

Let's get this straight right now. Having Aspergers does not make us any more dangerous than anyone else.

I'm not one for insubordination, but sometimes I wonder.

Do You Know Why I pulled You Over?

Do You Know Why I pulled You Over?

The police often think I'm up to no good. And when asked why I was pulled over I am often told "you were acting suspicious.

(In College No Less)

I often avoid situations where I am walking near women like, because everything I do is seen as threatening to some people.

Hiding Places

Hiding Places

When I can a kid, and sometimes after that I would escape away to a little world where I wrapped my hands in a circle on my desk and put my head on my hands. I could ignore the outside world that way, and it gave me comfort, which I needed when I just couldn't understand what was happening around me.

The Search

The Search

It took several years to get my first job, and even after graduating with a Associates degree in 3D Animation it took several more years to find even the proverbial "any job." For a lot of people on the spectrum it is almost impossible to get their dream job, and almost impossible to get "any job" without help from the proper channels. I currently have been a sales rep for 3 years, and have yet to break into my field since 2008.

Often times I will be asking a smart question, and be made to look like the fool.

Oh I'm Creepy?

Multiple times now I have been around "Gun lovers" talking about "Gun Stuff" and when I mention my martial arts, and kung-fu weapons I've been called "creepy"

Did I Say Astronaut Farmer?

Did I Say Astronaut Farmer?

Often times in interviews I will be asked stupid question in which the interviewer believes I am making everything up. The uncertainty on my face from being stressed about the interviewer liking me appears to them as if I am lying.

As I was learning to act nuerotypical sometimes I would get hit on from time to time and be completely oblivious to it. It wasn't till hours later that I realized.

Sick Day

Sick Day

Sometimes when I get sick the world around me gets quite a bit harder to block out. Lights are more annoying, and feel like they are touching me. They are even worse when flickering. I can hear, and feel everything around he at the highest "volume" in what I can only assume is what a hangover feels like.

First Post / Q and A

Growing Up Aspie

Growing Up Aspie: is a comic about my struggles, trials, tribulations, and triumphs of growing up with Aspergers syndrome. I knew that were other people like myself out there, and wanted to share some of my stories with everyone. Feel free to ask questions, make comments on your own stories. Please be respectful as I have already had one or two bad eggs come through. Other than that...Enjoy!

This was my first comic

Q&A

(Comment or email with any further questions.)

Q: Why do most of the other characters look like faceless aliens?

A: I chose to portray nuerotypicals how most aspies tend to see them (at first). They are often hard to read, and understand, leaving us with a feeling that we are on the wrong planet surrounded by people who are very unlike us. I wanted to portray that. You may notice people I’m close too often have face because I have learned to read them, or somehow been able to since I met them. (Side note: I am great at reading faces, body language, and voices now, as I have learned over time to spot minor differences like these.)

Q: You’re just pretending to have Aspergers (or) using it as a crutch.

A: For one, that’s not really a question, that’s an accusation. I was diagnosed as a child, and rediagnosed as an adult (as needed for job placement when it was impossible to find work) And as for a crutch, I don’t see myself as broken or disabled, I am not all “Woe is me” about having Aspergers, I recognize the benefits of thinking differently from everyone around me. I will say the world could learn to accept us into the workplace, and society a bit more….quite a bit more.

Q: Why do you feel like everyone is judging you or are out to get you?

A: Over the years I have learned to act nuerotypicals. When I act Aspie it makes people single me out, and attack me, and now when I act Nuerotypical it makes people question my motives, or my credibility because it seems like I’m lying. Which I am, because I am ACTING. So it can cause major problems in interviews, or while being pulled over by the police, or even just meeting my girlfriend’s parents for the first time. (What’s wrong with him? What is he hiding? Does he have gum?) No I don’t. *hides gum*

Q: Are all of these true stories?

A: Yes. They are either completely true stories that have happened to me, or parodies of those stories for added comedic effect.

Q: Do you think you’re better than everybody?

A: No. I address people as equals (Even superiors) until I am given a reason not to. I do however walk away thinking “Humans” when someone upsets me.

Q: What is the real reason you are doing this blog?

A: Because people think Autism stops at childhood barely giving any thought to those of us who actually make it into adulthood, and the struggles we have trying to get into the workplace. Because when I say I have Aspergers someone almost certainly asks “Are you worried your kids will be retarded?” Because out there right now there are people like me who have no idea that these things happened to other people. That’s why I do this.

Please comment below with any further questions, and I will answer them to the best of my ability.
